July 2011, In-house Laser Etching Announcement

The Noblesville Manufacturing Facility now has in-house laser etching capability. The laser etch is a permanent marking on the outside surface of almost any product. This is perfect for any product in an environment where our current label will not stick or fades over time. The laser etch is better than pad printing or silk screen processes in that it cannot be rubbed off over time.

Laser marking is a non-contact process that uses no consumables, making it clean and energy-efficient. It is also an environmentally friendly process that uses no inks and chemicals like those used in other marking options, including ink jet or chemical etching.

Laser marking is a method of labeling various kinds of objects using a laser.

Fiber lasers are effective for marking on many materials used by SMC, including:
  • Aluminum 2024/6061
  • Anodized Aluminum
  • Carbon Steel
  • Painted Steel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Delrin (plastic)

All logos, graphics and special labels provided by a customer that need to be laser etched onto a part should be in a vector graphic file format. All vector graphic files should have completely closed polylines and should not have any text/graphics filled.

Usable file formats accepted by SMC's laser:

  • AutoCAD (DWG)
  • Encapsulated Postscript (EPS)
  • Excellon2 File (EX2)
  • HPGL Plotter File (PLT)
  • Windows Enhanced Metafile (EMF)
