It is our belief that the right to privacy is a basic human right and that is why here at SMC, protecting your personal data is of the utmost importance. This Privacy Policy describes how, in accordance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations, SMC collects, uses, stores, shares, transfers, and processes an individual’s personal information. This policy applies to data collected both online, such as through our website, www.smcusa.com, and when collected in person, such as at a trade show or other demonstration. This policy also outlines your rights in determining what SMC does with your personal information and how you can submit a request to SMC regarding the use of that information.

Information Collection and Use
Information collected by SMC originates from SMC website user forms, SMC trade shows or marketing events, and SMC commercial sales. SMC may also at times acquire information generated outside of the organization, such as a third party software provider, but regardless of how your information is obtained, SMC will only use that information in line with this policy and all applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
SMC collects the following personal information from you:
- Contact Information such as name, email address, mailing address, phone number, and country location
- Unique Identifiers such as your password
- Business Information such as company name
SMC uses the personal information it collects from you for the following reasons:
- Send requested product or service information
- Respond to customer service requests
- Administer user accounts
- Send marketing communications or follow-up on sales leads
- Administer surveys entered through emails
- Enable the uploading of documents, such as resumes, and to contact individuals about job postings
- Permit the downloading of CAD files for SMC products
- Enable the viewing of images and catalogs related to SMC products
- When SMC believes in good faith that the use of your personal information is necessary to protect your safety, protect our rights, investigate fraud, or to protect the safety of others
Some services provided by SMC, such as emailing you a parts list from a drawing you created in our complimentary CAD design center, require only minimal information to complete, and although the information is not required to use the service, additional enhancements may not be available without the information we request from you.
SMC may also send you marketing emails from time to time at the email address you provide. Out of respect for your privacy, you may choose to stop receiving these marketing emails by following the unsubscribe/opt-out instructions included in these emails, or by contacting us at privacyrequests.us@smc.com.
At times, SMC may also provide you the opportunity to participate in contests or surveys. If you choose to participate, we will request certain personal information from you. Participation in these surveys or contests is completely voluntary and you have a choice whether to disclose this information. The requested information typically includes contact information (such as name and shipping address), and demographic information (such as age or zip code). SMC uses this information to evaluate your eligibility in the contest as well as to monitor customer service levels and customer satisfaction with various aspects of our business. The information may also be used to monitor site traffic and to personalize our web site in hopes of providing you with the best customer experience possible. Participants also receive an email newsletter on a periodic basis.
Information Sharing
SMC may share your personal information with third parties only in the ways that are described in this privacy policy and in accordance with all applicable laws. Third-party service providers could be used to send email or provide customer support and are strictly prohibited from using your personal information for any purpose other than for the contracted service.
No mobile information, including text messaging originator and opt-in data and consent, will be shared with third parties/affiliates for marketing/promotional purposes.
SMC Corporation of America does not sell your personal information to third parties.
We may provide your personal information to companies that provide services that enable us to do business with you, such as when shipping you SMC products ordered from our website or by phone. In some cases, SMC may provide your information to our authorized distributors or to other SMC entities. These companies are only authorized to use your personal information as necessary to provide their services to us.
Our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Email system providers also are required to maintain data privacy standards that protect your personal information from misuse. Data from these systems is used to send emails to interested parties, provide account information, track sales opportunities, and identify project data for our sales personnel and distribution partners.
We may also disclose your personal information:
- As required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena or similar legal process
- When we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect your safety, protect our rights, or protect the safety of others
- To investigate fraud or respond to a request from the government
- If SMC is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of all its assets*

International Transfers
To facilitate our operations, we may transfer, store, and process your personal information in jurisdictions other than where you live, including outside the United States. Laws in other countries may differ from the laws applicable to your country of residence. For instance, if you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA) and your personal information is shared with our affiliates, partners, or third-party service providers acting on our behalf outside of the EEA, then it is done so in a manner that continues to ensure your personal information receives a sufficient level of protection.
SMC makes every commercially reasonable effort to ensure that your personal information receives a level of protection that exceeds all applicable standards. This is done, for example, by employing technical controls and/or by entering Data Processing Agreements with our affiliates and business partners.
User Access and Choice
Upon request, SMC will provide you with information about whether we hold any of your personal information. If your personal information changes, or if you no longer desire our service, you may correct, update, amend, delete/remove or deactivate your personal information by logging in to your account and making the change on your member account information page, by emailing our SMC North America Privacy Department (privacyrequests.us@smc.com) or by calling the SMC Privacy line at 1-877-214-7768. We will respond to your request within 30 days.
If personal data is to be used in a way not previously disclosed or shared with external parties not covered in this Privacy Policy, you will be provided the opportunity to opt-out.
Digital Advertising
We sometimes partner with third parties to either display advertising on our website or to manage our advertising on other sites. For example, we use Google Analytics to measure the performance of our digital marketing. Our third-party partners may use technologies such as cookies to gather information about your activities on our site and other sites you visit in order to provide advertising based on your browsing activities and interests. If you wish to not have this information used for the purpose of serving you interest-based ads, you may opt-out by clicking here (or, if located in the European Union, click here). Please note this does not opt you out of all advertising as you will continue to receive generic ads.
Cookies and Other Tracking Technologies
SMC and our business partners, distributors, or analytics or service providers such as Google, SalesForce.com, SOLIDWORKS, Wistia, etc. use cookies and similar technologies to analyze trends, administer the site, track users’ movements around the site, and to gather demographic information about our userbase. We may receive reports based on the use of these technologies from these companies on an individual or aggregated basis.
We use cookies to remember users’ settings (e.g. language preference) and for user authentication (e.g. username and password).
As is true of most web sites, we gather certain information automatically and store it in log files. This information could include items such as internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, internet service provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, operating systems, date/time stamp, clickstream data, and/or other data required to provide functionality and the highest quality user experience.

Social Media Widgets
Our website includes Social Media Features, such as the “Facebook Like” button, and Widgets, such as the “Share This” button, as well as interactive mini-programs. These Features may collect your internet protocol address and which page you are visiting on our website. They may also set a cookie to enable these features to function properly. Social Media Features and Widgets are either hosted by a third party or hosted directly on our website. Your interactions with these Features are governed by the privacy statement of the company providing it.
Data Retention
We will retain your information for as long as your account is active or as long as needed to provide you our services unless you request otherwise in the manner described in this policy. There are certain instances when SMC will retain and use your information even after you have deactivated your account, or no longer desire to receive our services, such as when it is necessary to comply with our legal obligations, to resolve disputes, and to enforce our agreements.
